Stop the Big Brother state!

Excellent video. I'll make everybody in my vicinity watch this, whether they like it or not. ;-)

Privacy tools

Three essential tools for safeguarding your privacy (as discussed in my crimethink! presentation in Eisenstadt):

2. TrueCrypt [http://truecrypt.org]
3. GnuPG [http://gnupg.org]

... and of course

4. your brain (in security, as in all other matters, *thinking helps*)

Beware the Four Horsemen of the Information Apocalypse: terrorists, drug dealers, kidnappers and child pornographers. Seems like you can scare any public into allowing the government to do anything with those four.

Practical Secret Protection (PSP)

Alice wants to send a secret to Bob. Alice kills everyone on the planet except Bob, and sends the message in clear. It should be noted that although this method could potentially involve 2^32.5 = 6,000,000 operations, this is significantly fewer than the 2^56 that are required to brute-force attack the simplest cipher known to man.

Thomas Martin, Laurence O'Toole: Practical Secret Protection. Journal of Craptology 2 (2005).

Finally a secure cryptoalgorithm.... the only one I've come across so far in my research for my talk on Saturday.

Government is at best a necessary evil, and it is getting more evil and less necessary by the minute.

That is exactly what you think it is: Phoenix descending to the Martian surface underneath its parachute. This incredible shot was taken by the HiRISE camera on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. You can easily see the ‘chute, the lander (still in its shell) and even the tether lines!

Think on this, and think on it carefully: you are seeing a manmade object falling gracefully and with intent to the surface of an alien world, as seen by another manmade object already circling tht world, both of them acting robotically, and both of them hundreds of million of kilometers away.

Never, ever forget: we did this. This is what we can do.

(quoted entirely from Bad Astronomy Blog » Best. Image. Ever.)

kyrah: This is simply amazing. I am in awe of the engineers and scientists who made this possible. Thank you for reminding me that even in these dark times, not all is lost for humankind. We may yet prevail.

I know it's hard to tell
how mixed up you feel,
hoping what you need
is behind every door.

This feeling sometimes
wishing you were someone else,
feeling as though you never belong:

This feeling is not sadness,
this feeling is not joy.
I truly understand.

I don't want you to change
for all the hurt that you feel.
The world is just illusion
trying to change you.

The world is just illusion
Always trying to break you.

kyrah's book recommendation of the month

Naomi Wolf has identified 10 steps in how free and democratic societies are closed down. (A good summary of them can also be found in this article.) They are being put in practice as we speak, not only in the US but also here in Europe.

If you read only one "political" book this year, make it this one.

Don't read the words above – just say the colours they are printed in. Do this aloud as fast as you can.

If you are like most people, you'll just have experienced the Stroop effect

You are not always in complete control of what you pay attention to.

Something to try and keep in mind...
