kyrah semi-offline
I'll be at the Eurographics Symposium on Rendering in Sarajevo until June 26. I will probably be reading email sporadically, but don't count on it. :)

Science Made Stupid
All you ever wanted to know about the Universe, Matter & Energy, and the parentage of Adam and Eve's daughter-in-law.
A full discussion of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle may be found in the Appendix. (Then again, it may not.)
Hilarious!
First RepRap 3d printing at Metalab
Good news from the Metalab.
On June the 18th of 2008 we printed our first test objects with our newly refurbished RepStrap. For our first tests we used a 0.8mm nozzle to extrude HDPE that we extruded at about 180°C [...]

Supreme Court Restores Rule Of Law To Guantánamo
This is a landmark decision. Of course we will have to see whether it is actually implemented, and naturally it won't apply to any of the black sites, but if nothing else, it has an important symbolic value. It is inspiring to see that at least there are some men and women still willing to defend the rule of the law.
kyrah's book recommendation of the month
A brilliant introduction to our current understanding of the universe. In presenting the beautiful mathematical principles that lie behind the laws of physics, Penrose goes far beyond the superficiality of most "popular science" books. Yet he develops all the more advanced concepts from the basics of undergraduate maths, so you don't need a PhD in physics to follow him on his amazing journey to the frontiers of what we know.
This is the book I've been looking for for the last decade, without ever truly beliving it had actually been written. Awesome.

“ A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly.— Robert A. HeinleinSpecialization is for insects.”

Excellent video. I'll make everybody in my vicinity watch this, whether they like it or not. ;-)

2. TrueCrypt [http://truecrypt.org]
3. GnuPG [http://gnupg.org]
... and of course
4. your brain (in security, as in all other matters, *thinking helps*)
